Welcome to FlexWorksOnline™ ν1.41 A cloud-based version of the FlexWorks Compliant Design tool that is available for download. This tool will create a 2D representation of a flexing mechanical mechanism based on your inputs, and desired output. The 3rd dimension (Z depth, or out-of-plane width) is included as a value, but not shown visually.
Simple instructions
  1. Drag the Input (blue) and Output (red) Vectors
  2. Drag the Boundary Box (gray) to the desired location and size
  3. Submit for processing
  4. Optionally, add a Mount area (green) and an Output force
I/O Vectorstop
The arrows shown represent motion you would like to see from your device. Input is the actuation vector, and Output is the resulting motion from the device. Using your mouse, drag them and change their length to signify both direction and magnitude. They can be fine-tuned using numbers in the value boxes. The light red arrow opposing the output vector is Output Force (See below for more on that) In the FlexWorks Download Version, the scale will increase as needed. also, Input can be defined as [X Direction], Y Free or [Y Direction, X Free]. In this online version, the default is [As Defined]. If you notice in your solution, the input is fixed to the vector as if on sliders, and not free to move otherwise. There are more Output choices as well.
Boundarytop
This is the overall size of your device. The solver code will do its best to stay within this area when creating a device. Simply mouse drag it into position. Input and Output vectors should be kept within this space. Fine tune location and size using the value boxes.
Submittingtop
Send your criteria to the server and run FlexWorks proprietary distributed compliant design solver and optimizers. This may take some time depending on how complex the problem definition. While running, design search iterations are shown in the Ready box. At this time, the speed of this may be affected by it handling multiple users. Please be patient. The FlexWorks Download Version with many additional features is available for faster results by selecting the MORE POWER button.

Animate This button shows the device in action when the solution is returned. Click anywhere on the device to activate it again. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of stresses is shown as well. In the FlexWorks Download Version there are additional analysis tools.

Optionstop

Scale Choose English or metric to change the scale.

Mount Area There will be beams that need to be grounded, or fixed at one end, for functionality. This optional feature allows you to specify an area where you are able to fix, or mount, the grounds. This is used when you are trying to get close to existing mounts, or when part of the device will be cantilevered in space. To activate this feature, check the box under Options “Show Mount” for an additional boundary box. Then specify the area where you need the beams to be grounded. This may limit the ability for the resolver to find a solution to meet all requirements.

Beam min/max Each beam will be split into sections that look like steps in thickness. These will be smoothed in the final IGES file, but are used for the FEA. In the online version, the number of sections has been defaulted to 4. In the FlexWorks Download Version, this is selectable and view of the smoothed version can be toggled.

Out Force Short for Output Force, this optional value is in the Options menu. This represents how much force your device needs to exert on something to move or activate it. Similar to Spring Force because it will also be the force stored in the device to return to its natural state. The resolver code will consider this value when determining the length, width and out-of-plane depth of the beams. The beams will be made more rigid to not buckle under this force. Note: The force vector shown will not change size when increasing the default value. In the FlexWorks Download Version, this vector can be specified at an angle independent of the Output vector angle. The out-of-plane width/Z depth can be specified, along with buckling and safety factors.

This java interface requires the use of Chrome or Firefox to function properly.
